Research Highlights
On April 20th, six statistics majors and three data science majors presented research posters at CURC (Celebrating Undergraduate Research and Creativity) 2023. These posters were for research they worked on during last summer’s inaugural statistics department undergraduate research program. The College of Natural Sciences has an article about it here. We will be running our research program again this summer with a new set of projects and students.

Dan Cooley is the 2023 winner of the Distinguished Achievement Award from the ASA Section on Statistics and the Environment. Congrats!

Undergraduate Jin Peng has accepted an offer to enter the PhD program at Penn State University! She will begin her studies there this fall. Jin received our Undergraduate Academic Achievement Award for 2023 and our Undergraduate Early Academic Achievement Award for 2021. She also presented a research poster at the CURC 2023 research fair on work done with Haonan Wang and Gray Stanton in summer of 2022. We are delighted that Jin will be continuing her education in statistics.
Groups
The Statistics Teaching Working Group is open to all faculty, postdocs and grad students. Lunch is provided (RSVP to Kayleigh Keller). The group will meet one more time this semester:

May 2 at 4 pm and May 4 at 11:15 am in room 006 to talk about how the topics from the book apply to ChatGPT and other “large language models”.
